The Century Plant, Blue Agave, or Agave Americana, are some of the largest in the agave family and are recognizable anywhere. Comically named the century plant, it truly only lives 10 – 30 years. The large sword shaped, gray-green leaves spread open in a rosette up to 13’ wide and over 6’ tall. These plants are monocarpic and only flower once, at the end of its life. The enormous yellow flowers can reach up to 30’ tall and be seen from a distance. Be careful to give this agave plenty of room when planting. Not only does it become very large, it will also produce many offsets, often colonizing an area.
