One of the most common questions we hear at OC Succulents is, “How do I know when it’s time to repot my plant?”
Repotting is an important part of keeping your plants healthy. While it may seem intimidating, giving your plant a little extra room to grow can encourage healthier roots, stronger growth, and happier plants overall.
Not sure if it’s time? Here are seven signs to look for.
🌿 1. Roots Are Growing Out of the Drainage Holes
Take a look at the bottom of your pot.
If you notice roots poking through the drainage holes, your plant has likely outgrown its current container. This is one of the clearest signs that it needs more space for its root system to expand.
Tip: Gently slide the plant out of its pot to inspect the roots. If they’re tightly circling the root ball, it’s time for an upgrade.
🪴 2. The Soil Dries Out Quickly
Do you feel like you’re watering your plant more often than usual?
When roots take up most of the space inside the pot, there’s less room for soil to hold moisture. As a result, water drains through quickly, leaving your plant thirsty sooner than expected.
If you’re watering much more frequently without changes in weather or lighting, your plant may be ready for a larger pot.
🌱 3. Your Plant Has Stopped Growing
If your plant has been healthy but suddenly stops producing new leaves or stems during its normal growing season, it may have become root-bound.
When roots run out of room, plants often slow their growth because they no longer have the space they need to expand.
🍂 4. Leaves Are Yellowing or Wilting
Yellow leaves don’t always mean your plant needs water.
Sometimes, overcrowded roots make it difficult for the plant to absorb the moisture and nutrients it needs.
If you’ve ruled out watering issues, repotting could help restore your plant’s health.
🌵 5. The Pot Looks Too Small
Sometimes the easiest sign is simply looking at your plant.
If the foliage is much wider or taller than the pot, it may have outgrown its container.
A slightly larger pot helps support both the roots below and the growth above.
🌼 6. The Soil Is Old or Compacted
Over time, potting soil breaks down.
Compacted soil doesn’t drain as well, holds fewer nutrients, and limits airflow around the roots.
Even if your plant doesn’t need a significantly larger container, replacing the old soil with fresh potting mix can give it a healthy boost.
🌞 7. It’s the Right Time of Year
Spring and early summer are generally the best times to repot most houseplants because they’re entering their active growing season.
During this time, plants recover more quickly and adjust to their new container with less stress.
How Much Bigger Should the New Pot Be?
A common mistake is choosing a pot that’s much too large.
Instead, select a container that’s about 1–2 inches larger in diameter than the current pot for smaller plants, or 2–4 inches larger for larger specimens.
Choosing the right size helps prevent excess soil from staying wet for too long, which can increase the risk of root rot.
Repotting Tips for Success
Before you begin, keep these simple tips in mind:
- 🌿 Water your plant a day before repotting to reduce stress.
- 🪴 Use fresh, high-quality potting mix suited to your plant.
- 🌱 Loosen tightly wound roots gently before placing the plant in its new container.
- 💧 Water thoroughly after repotting to help settle the soil.
- ☀️ Give your plant a few days to adjust before placing it in intense direct sunlight.
Don’t Repot Too Often
While repotting is beneficial, more isn’t always better.
Most houseplants only need repotting every 1–2 years, while slower-growing plants—such as many succulents and cacti—can often go 2–3 years before needing a larger container.
The key is to watch your plant rather than the calendar.
