A common misconception about agave is that they flower every 100 years. “The Century Plant” is the common name given to Agave Americana, and some of its variegated counter parts, Agave Americana Variegata, and Agave Americana Medio-Picta ‘Alba’ are just a couple. The truth is, these plants all have varying bloom times. They’ll bloom around 15-20 years old, not a century. With many agaves, you can stunt the growth, and the bloom time, by not watering them as frequently. Regular irrigation will increase the growth, but also shorten the lifespan. If you want to enjoy your agaves for as long as possible, find the zone of keeping them looking good, without overgrowing them. Good luck!
